Born in Trieste in 1962, he mainly deals with the visual identity of public bodies and private companies. He has worked, among others, for the Venice Biennale, the Castle of Versailles, the Centre Pompidou, Palazzo Grassi – Punta della Dogana / François Pinault Foundation, Mart di Rovereto, Studio Giulio Iacchetti, the Archaeological Superintendence of Rome, the New York Times, SNCF (French Railways), Artissima – International Contemporary Art Fair of Turin and the furniture company Zanotta.
He has taught at the RISD – Rhode Island School of Design (USA) – and at the IUAV in Venice; he currently teaches at the ISIA in Urbino and regularly holds workshops and conferences on his activity in Italy and abroad.
In 2004 he was the only Italian included by Phaidon Press, in the volume AREA, in the list of the hundred most important and innovative graphic designers in the world. His projects are preserved in numerous international public collections and he has received prestigious awards, including the 2008 Rodchenko Prize, the silver medal at the Toyama Triennale (Japan), the first prize at the Hangzhou Biennale (China), the Merit Award of the Art Directors Club of New York (USA) and, in 2011, the Compasso d 'Oro (in addition to two honorable mentions in 2001 and 2014).
He is one of the very few Italian members of the Alliance Graphique Internationale. He lives and runs his own studio, "Studio Leonardo Sonnoli", in Rimini.
